Easy to digest even when you’re run ragged with the Christmas shopping ; here are five of the best nutrient-dense tips for the festive season…
Look after your liver, its busy during the party season. It detoxifies and metabolises and it may well go into overdrive this time of year. Ok, a Seasonal Smoothie wont undo that last drink you really didn’t need, but it can sure pack a large nutrient punch. And when there isn’t time for anything but your Christmas shopping, add a banana to your smoothie to help you rehydrate and recover that bit faster. Potassium helps to maintain fluid levels and helps muscles to contract and nerve cells to respond. It keeps the heart beating regularly and can reduce the effect of sodium on blood pressure. All pretty important to survive the Christmas!
It’s not all about pounding the high street for beautifully wrapped gifts. Well not really. Connect with friends and ideally where you can share a really good chat in KC Peaches! Sit and share an energy-giving delicious tasting Forager’s Breakfastwith a friend or family. The complete-protein and memory-boosting choline found in eggs, together with the fibre and phytonutrient rich cabbage, kale and mushroom make this a very complete with delicious crowd pleaser for friends and family alike. The sourdough bread is necessary sustenance for the abuse your legs are going to get racing around the town!
When you know the rest of day will just be hectic, get your nutrition in early! Pop some mixed nuts and fresh fruit into your bag for later but fuel up first, when your metabolism is high with some Avocado and Eggs or Low Sugar Granola packed with Nuts & Seeds. Packed full of protein, micronutrients and healthy fat this is a winning combination. Rich in monounsaturated fats, the avocado has a unique nutrition profile. Avocadoes contain lots of fibre, B-vitamins, vitamin K, E and C -simply bursting with anti-oxidants. Nuts contain a wide range of essential nutrients, fiber and protein along with antioxidants to help you feel energised. So don’t feel guilty about avos or the nuts. They contain wonderful nutrition so enjoy! Kickstart your morning with this dish and it will take you all the way to that little black dress and party time.
Skip the sugar hit when feeling sluggish physically and mentally. It only leads to further cravings and a feeling of utter dissatisfaction! Sugar is ultimately an energy robber. Do your immune system a favour and reach for a Guacamole Green salad, freshly made to order with loads of veggie fibre and protein OR grab a medium box and build your own sustainable and filling flexitarian lunch. We have plenty of veggie sources of protein such as lentils, chickpeas, butter beans, tofu , quinoa nuts and seeds such as pumpkin, sesame, sunflower – all of which add great flavour, great texture and boost the protein content of vegetarian meals.
Think Food and Mood! Turkey is a great lean meat this time of year. It’s a fabulous protein rich choice, which really makes it a satisfying lunch. And its naturally low in fat too. It also contains zinc, a mineral that keeps the immune system in tip-top shape. A 90g serving of roasted, skinless turkey breast contains just 140 calories and 1.8g fat compared with 160 calories and 5.9g fat in the same sized serving of dark meat. Turkey is one of the few foods that contains tryptophan which helps produce serotonin the happy neurotransmitter!
Roast veg salad
We were in the kitchen yesterday meeting with our resident head chef, Michael to have a look at the new roast vegetable salad coming to stores soon. Packed with heartwarming roasted winter vegetables and fresh lemon and orange dressing, this salad is the perfect blend of filling, nutritious and delicious. Try it for yourself at home by following along with the recipe below or head to our stores now and enjoy the same homemade goodness. This salad is vegan friendly and does not contain gluten.
1 sweet potato
1 butternut squash
1 red onion
1 cup pumpkin seeds
Juice of 1 lemon
Juice of 1 orange
Squeeze of agave syrup
Table spoon of mustard
2 table spoons olive oil (optional)
Chop the sweet potato, butternut squash and red onion into small cubes. Place on a baking tray and bake for 40 minutes or until soft and golden brown. In a bowl, mix the kale, roasted vegetables and pumpkin seeds together and set aside. For the dressing, mix all of the ingredients together using a whisk and place on the side or store in a container and refrigerate to use later as needed. When you are ready to serve, pour the dressing on top, mix thoroughly, top with salt and pepper as desired and enjoy!

We are proud to launch a KC Peaches Speciality Guest Coffee in two of our stores this Autumn Season. Together with the our suppliers Java Republic, we have chosen a unique Brazilian Coffee: Sitio Capoeira - Jeriquara.
This single origin blend will be available in Pearse St. and St. Stephen's Green from Tuesday the 12th of September as a guest coffee to our current blend.
About The Farm:
Sitio Capoeira is a family-run farm owned by Fernandes & Jose Malta. Fernandes’ family have a long history in coffee production going back generations on high quality.
The farm is based in Jeriquara town, city founded in 1883 and which name means “Turtle refugee” in Brazilian Indian language. Coffee production is the most important agricultural industry within this municipality and the wider region of Alta Mogiana.
Alta Mogiana traditionally produces specialty coffees due to a combination of its favourable climate, high altitude and farmer expertise. And Sitio Capoeira it is not an exception.
Why this coffee it is so unusual:
Fully sun-dried coffee is a rare find in Brazil and this coffee started life as a happy little accident.
After running out of space on their drying patio, farmers were forced to leave some of their coffee on the truck awaiting processing. Three days later when the space had cleared they carried out a very slow and carefully monitored drying process until the optimum moisture level had been reached. Upon tasting the new coffee for the first time they were blown away. This three day slow fermentation period had allowed the coffee to obtain an intense fruity profile rarely seen in Brazilian coffee.
This single origin blend will be available in KC Peaches Pearse St. and St. Stephen's Green from Tuesday the 12th of September as a guest coffee to our current blend.
So, in 2014, I made the move to Ireland to work with KC Peaches. This afforded me the opportunity to greatly expand my skills in coffee origin, processing, preparation and latte art. The coffee industry is a growing phenomenon in Ireland, consumers are becoming more precise about their coffee blend choices, milk type and brewing methods, and KC Peaches is a great place to learn. The company nurtures the passion and growth of their staff, focusing on consistency in all aspects of customer, coffee and food service.
I explored many aspects of the KC Peaches business in different roles, but when KC Peaches partnered with Java Republic to provide natural, locally sourced, seasonal coffee, served to the highest standard, the time was right to focus on my first calling- the barista. Working with the Java Republic team, my coffee knowledge has been raised to new levels, learning from Q graders, SCA and AST trainers. Capitalising on these opportunities, my ambition is to be one of the top baristas in Ireland. It will be challenging but hard work always pays off.
This year sees me take a step closer to my goals, I will compete in Aeropress and latte art competition 2017. This is a first for me, preforming at the highest level. I favour the pour over method made with V60 and I’m really big fan of fully washed coffees -especially from both Kenya and Ethiopia. I will bring these methods to the event, where hopefully they will prove successful. I have always been an achiever, professionally, in sports or any other aspect of life and I hope to perform well in this year’s competition. I am sure it will be a learning experience that will help realise my ambitions. I believe in success through hard work and dedication, if you want something, work hard and you will achieve it, there are no shortcuts. It’s true in life and latte, great coffee doesn’t just happen!
